Breaking Political Stories and Commentary. "We're at the height of the Roman Empire for the Republican Party, but the tide slowly but surely goes out." --Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham, South Carolina
Every once in a long while in this blog, I've mentioned my fondness for the Empire State Building. For as long as I can remember, I've been twisting my neck to look up at it, and have gone up to its observation decks many many times. Over the years, I've come to think of it as sort of the center of my world. Even now, my jogging route takes me by it, just to its west, underneath its soaring tower.

This summer, I was annoyed that the Republican National Convention decided to incorporate the ESB into its logo -- a insult to a building whose main backer was New York Governor, and 1928 Democratic presidential candidate, Alfred Smith. The ESB is the most Democratic of buildings, in the center of an island of Democrats who are the bluest of the blue state residents. But the RNC is gone, and the ESB is still here.

Normally, I would have gone jogging tomorrow morning, but I'll be on a bus then -- headed to the state of Pennsylvania -- to spend my day getting out the vote for candidate Kerry. So, I went for my jog tonight. At the intersection of Broadway and 33rd, I looked up and to my left, at the ESB.

The ESB changes its lighting colors nearly every night, recognizing a seemingly endless succession of random holidays, commemorations, and other events.

Tonight, the Empire State Building is lit blue, bright and solid. Glowing like a beacon.
