Breaking Political Stories and Commentary. "We're at the height of the Roman Empire for the Republican Party, but the tide slowly but surely goes out." --Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham, South Carolina
From the Associated Press:
WASHINGTON - A London-to-Washington flight was diverted to Maine when it was discovered that passenger Yusuf Islam — formerly known as singer Cat Stevens — was on a government watch list and barred from entering the country.

United Airlines Flight 919 was en route to Dulles International Airport when the match was made Tuesday between a passenger and a name on the watch list, said Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.

The plane was met by federal agents at Maine's Bangor International Airport around 3 p.m., Melendez said.

Homeland Security Department spokesman Dennis Murphy identified the passenger as Islam. "He was interviewed and denied admission to the United States on national security grounds," Murphy said.
That rumble you hear is the crumbling resolve of Al-Qaeda.

I heard this on the news this morning and laughed my ass off.  Yeah, the singer of "peace train" is a suspected terrorist.

It's too bad Mohammed Atta didn't have some hit albums in the 70's -- we might still have the WTC.

YOu miss the point. Iuse to have some Cat Stevens Albums. I destroyed them when he endorsed the murder of Salman Rushdie. Anyone advocating the death of a person for merely writing a book, is a terrorist. His so called peace preachings not withstanding, he is a dangerous man due to his preaching, and one we dont need here in this country.

The singer of "peace train" that supports the assassination of "enemies of Islam" and who had donated money and material to Hamas. I suppose a few hit songs gives you a free-ride when it comes to actively supporting suicide bombers...

Funny, if this had been some gangsta rap star, people wouldn't have batted an eye. When it is some guy that used to be a anti-war, 70's hippy, though, it doesn't matter what his ideologies are. Is why Kerry has a possibility of election, I guess.

So's John Ashcroft, but we let HIM stay. I'm happy you played the Nazi book-burner with your Albums.

you have said nothing that backs this up. the next time 50 Cent gets refused entry to the country, come make this argument again.

(sings) 'There is a cat named Stevens who won't be let into this country anymore, ooo woooo.'

If 50 cent got denied entry, I'd Balk. But this guy shouldn't be in this country. Neither should Cheney.

With good reason, actually. The support of the Salman Rushdie fatwa notwithstanding, Yusuf Islam has been an active fundraiser for groups that channel money to Hamas.

Destroying his OWN albums, that he purchased, is not censorship, it's a personal choice.

By your standard, I am censoring rap artists by not having their music in my house.

Hear,Hear!!! You wanna support terrorism? Fine. But YOU AIN't gonna do it here!

I'm just astonished that they didn't catch him until the plain landed on US shores. What would have heppened if he were a real terrorist? I guess we would have just contended with the fact that he made a "crash landing" in Washington. I doubt a real terrorsit would heed the diversion orders. So much for a more secure United States! Thanks a lot, Bush.

I don't think every supporter of terrorism is at heart a suicide bomber, but I do agree that he should've been kicked off the plane sooner.

Careful, folks. Stretch the definition of terrorist too far and it will become meaningless. After all, on national TV Jimmy Swaggert just advocated killing any homosexual who looked at him the wrong way. (He said he'd tell God the guy just died, forgetting that whole omniscience thing I guess.) I guess he'd be a terrorist by this thinking. Or he would have been if he hadn't apologized today. Oh, but wait...would you guys be satisfied if Cat Stevens apologized for supporting the Rushdie manhunt?

This is not to say that I support Steven's actions in either financially contributing to Hamas (and the like) or supporting the fatwa on Rushdie. We can think of all kinds of names for him and still keep him out of the country. But let's keep our focus on the actual terrorists and not turn "terrorists" into the Red-witch-hunts of our time. Cuz if all it takes to be a "terrorist" is deathwishes for an author you don't like and few donations, we're all f**ked.
